The Public Protector and the Engineering Council of South Africa are exploring ways and means of collaborating on future investigations relating to maladministration incidents that involve engineering companies and professionals.
Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela and Deputy Public Protector Advocate Mamiki Shai met with Christopher Campbell, the Council’s President, on Thursday, 21 October 2010 to discuss their institutions’ respective roles.
During the meeting, the two parties agreed to develop and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which will see, among other things, the council availing technical support to assist the Public Protector in investigations involving the built environment.
The MOU will also cover possible cooperation by the two institutions to accelerate the process of changing the law to close loopholes that allow companies and professionals that are not registered to undertake state contracts without being accountable to a professional body.
The parties further agreed that there was a need for an integrated regulatory framework for the engineering profession, particularly where members of this profession undertake public works as this is important for public health and safety.
