Public Protector meets the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP)

Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela had her first meeting with a political party today in Pretoria. The meeting took place with the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) represented by Rev Kenneth Meshoe (President) and Mr Raymond Tlaeli (Secretary General).

The meeting forms part of the Public Protector’s Stakeholder Consultative Process which seeks to achieve a common understanding of the Public Protector’s mandate by different stakeholders and to get feedback on the work the Public Protector has done in the past 20 months.

The Public Protector discussed how the institution provides administrative justice and exact accountability in the exercise of public power and control over state resources. The parties agreed on the importance of remedial action.

The discussions also touched on Public Protector Draft Rules which have been developed as a means to standardise timelines, subpoenas, alternative dispute resolution mechanism and contempt orders.

Rev Meshoe said the ACDP welcomes the opportunity to engage with the Public Protector and that his party supports the institution as it is fulfilling its constitutional mandate. He said corruption is a cancer that is threatening democracy and that he will use the institution to lodge complaints as he has confidence in the integrity of the Public Protector.

The Public Protector said she is grateful for the support, encouragement and confidence the ACDP has in the institution which is giving voice to the voiceless whilst being the conscience of the state.
