Public Protector engage with Swedish Committee on the Constitution

Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela was on Thursday praised by the Chairman of the Swedish Committee on Constitution Mr Peter Eriksson for the job her office continues to do.

This followed their meeting in Pretoria during which her work, democracy issues, freedom of expression and other fundamental rights in the country, among others, were discussed.

Chairman Eriksson is leading the Swedish Committee on a five-day visit in the country. The delegation comprises Members of Parliament from various parties in the Scandinavian country.

"We have heard good things about you and your office, and you are doing a great job. Your investigations continue to make a difference in people's lives and the country," he said.

Speaking at the meeting, the Public Protector thanked the delegation for the message of support and briefed them about the work of the office. She highlighted the success stories as well as challenges the office faced in pursuit of its constitutional mandate.

The Public Protector was particularly taken by the idea of a Parliamentary Committee dedicated to constitutional issues and also noted with interest the fact that the committee is entitled to receive records and decisions of government even if these are classified as secret.

"I am particularly interested in the fact that the Swedish Ombudsman reports to a Committee that specifically focuses on the Constitution. I have also noted with interest that the committee has full access to government decisions and records even if classified as "secret," she said.

Since their arrival on Monday, the Committee has visited Parliament and held meetings with non-governmental organisations, focusing on development.

Interesting fact - The idea of the office of Ombudsman or Public Protector originated in Sweden, more than 200 years ago.
