Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela sends condolences to the family of former Chief Justice Pius Langa

Public Protector Advocate Thuli Madonsela has reacted with shock and sadness to the news of the passing of former Chief Justice, Pius Langa. The entire Public Protector South Africa is deeply saddened by the loss.

“On behalf of all of us at Public Protector South Africa, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Justice Langa as they struggle to come to terms with the loss. Our condolences also go to the judiciary, particularly the Constitutional Court,” said the Public Protector.

She added that Justice Langa was a distinguished jurist who contributed immensely to justice particularly in the area of giving meaning to the constitution, with emphasis on ending poverty as a socioeconomic rights issue.

The Public Protector added that Justice Langa's excellent and exemplary service left a huge footprint in law and constitutional jurisprudence in particular. The best tribute we can pay him and other lawyers like him who have since left us is to continue the public service work they started, she said.

“South Africa has lost a brilliant legal mind. I know how difficult this must be for the family. They are in our thoughts and prayers. There are no words that make this any easier, but hopefully just knowing that the people of South Africa care, will allow them to lay some of the burdens on us. Even though it seems impossible right now, I know they will find a way to get through this,” the Public Protector said.
