The Public Protector’s state-owned vehicle was involved in an accident in the early hours of Wednesday morning. It crashed onto a wall of a private household.
The Public Protector was not a passenger at the time of the accident. She was asleep at home after returning from an official function in Sandton, Johannesburg the previous night.
It emerged that the Public Protector’s son was the driver at the time of the accident. The driver, who is legally licensed to drive, did not sustain any serious injuries.
The incident was immediately reported to the Garsfontein Police Station on Wednesday and the Public Protector expects the law to take its course.
“I will submit myself to internal processes regarding the use of state vehicles in line with terms and conditions of my employment. I have already made contact with the owners of the affected property and agreed to compensate them for the damage,” said the Public Protector.
