The Public Protector, Adv Thuli Madonsela had a constructive meeting with the MEC Faith Mazibuko of the Gauteng Department of Community Safety and Liaison in Pretoria on 1 December 2011.
The purpose of the meeting was to find common ground between the department and Traffic officers who allege that they have been unfairly dismissed by the department after the successful completion of their 12 months training and the subsequent graduation ceremony at which they were awarded Diplomas.
The meeting between the Public Protector and the MEC with their teams noted that the department does not have budget to effect the absorption of the Traffic Officers during the current financial year and agreed that they be absorbed into the Patroller Movement Programme during the festive period of December 2011 until January 2012.
During the month of January 2011, the department undertook to put officers through the Examiners Course with the intention of multi-skilling them. The MEC and her team further undertook to engage with Metropolitan Councils and Municipalities in the province with the purpose of absorbing them as Examiners Officers at various Driver Learner Testing Centres (DLTCs) in the Province.
Lastly the MEC indicated that the department would be recruiting Traffic Officers again during the next financial year and that her department would prioritise the affected Traffic Officers for absorption since they do not require further training.
