Public Enterprises Portfolio Committee regrets SAA Board resignations

The Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises regrets the sudden resignations of South African Airways (SAA) Chairperson, Ms Cheryl Carolus and seven Board members.

The Acting Chairperson of the Committee, Dr Gerhard Koornhof says he is deeply concerned by the unexpected resignations. “SAA is a state-owned company which means it needs to prescribe to good governance principles and should operate in a financially self-sustainable manner. The Board members and management of the parastatal need to find mechanisms to deal with the challenges that the airline is facing and find solutions,” says Dr Koornhof.

The Committee is confident that Minister of Public Enterprises, as a shareholder, will ensure that good governance at SAA will not be compromised.

The Committee also noted the Minister’s letter to the Speaker that the 2011/12 annual report and financial statements of SAA would not tabled before the deadline of 30 September.

In its oversight role, the Committee wants to ensure principles of good governance are adhered to at SAA.

The Committee has always been supportive of SAA (including the airline’s management and Board members) and will continue to do so.
