Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba was named Transport Personality of the Year by Africa Rail at a gala dinner held at the Sandton Convention Centre yesterday (25 June 2013). The function was part of the four-day Africa Rail 2013 conference which started on Monday.
The organisers of the conference say the award aims to recognise an individual whose ideas, achievements and vision has provided invaluable direction, leadership and a voice to Africa’s transport sector.
In his acceptance speech, Minister Gigaba thanked the Department of Public Enterprises for their support and dedication. He also thanked State Owned Companies for their contributions to creating a better country, adding that “we all have a responsibility to develop and protect railway lines.”
“I receive the award on behalf of the Department and its dedicated personnel. This is testimony of their hard work,” said Minister Gigaba.
Minister Gigaba was nominated for the strides he has made in leading the department in debates on rail, transformation in the industry, promoting safety and ensuring that the highest standards are maintained.
