Provincial government meets Mkhondo residents committee

A delegation from the Mpumalanga Provincial Government has met with representatives from of the Mkhondo residents committee to discuss the progress made on the investigations of the allegations made by the community against the municipality.

The provincial government would like to appreciate the positive contributions made by the residents committee in dealing with the matters. During the meeting it was agreed upon that whilst the investigations have commenced there is a need to allocate more time for the investigators to do a diligent job. Therefore the investigators will be given until the end of August 2009 to produce a preliminary report to the both Premier David Mabuza and MEC Norman Mokoena. After they have considered the report they will then report back to community.

It was further agreed that as from 3 August 2009, the residents committee and the administrator and his team will embark on a roadshow to visit all wards in the municipality to introduce the administrator and his team, engage the community and give them feedback on progress made since the municipality was put under administration in terms of Section 139 (1) (b) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 (Act No.108 of 1996).

The municipality was placed under administration following numerous events of unrest in the municipality. The unrest was due to protests organised by the community, where the community made a number of allegations against the municipality. Some of these allegations include misappropriation of funds, lack of service delivery, nepotism, poor implementation of the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and lack of proper consultation in terms of resource distribution and infrastructure.
