Executive Mayors and Mayors should not succumb to pressure to mortgage their municipalities to tenderprenuers nor protect thieves and those who are corrupt within their institutions, Premier Mme Thandi Modise said at the closure of the North West Premier Coordinating Council held in Taung on Thursday.
Premier Modise said that as political and administrative leaders in their municipalities, Mayors should be at the forefront of fighting corruption in their respective municipalities and pursue criminal and civil charges against those who have misused resources or failed to deliver on contracts they were awarded by their institutions.
“You should choose between popularity or integrity because public representatives are elected to serve not to use their positions to pursue their personal and or business interests,” the Premier emphasised.
Modise underscored that employment of unskilled and unqualified people can only serve to weaken the sphere of government closest to communities.
“Those who are practicing nepotism and patronage in their institutions are only sharpening axes against their own necks because only qualified and appropriately skilled people will enable municipalities to accelerate service delivery” she cautioned.
The Premier said that the best present municipalities can give their communities are cleaner towns before Christmas.
“Install Christmas lights on street poles only after cleaning your towns,” she ordered.
