Professor Asmal, protagonist of the SA revolution, mourned

Eastern Cape Premier, Miss Noxolo Kiviet, paid tribute to the African National Congress (ANC) stalwart and former cabinet minister Professor Kader Asmal who died yesterday. She described Professor Asmal as a protagonist of the revolution that carried to heart the ANC’s historic responsibility of uniting the South African nation across the boundaries of colour, race and creed.

“Professor Asmal through his astuteness as an activist and a politician was no man’s lackey. He remained unbiased and critical of our steps towards fulfilling the vision of the founding fathers of our revolution as well as the Freedom Charter. Definitely as a country we have lost not just a knowledge fountain but a mirror that continuously beamed back to us images of ourselves and their appropriateness in serving the will of the people of South Africa.

“While in our view death is always crass and inappropriate, it provides us with an opportunity of reflection. With the passing away of Professor Asmal, shortly after Mrs Albertina Sisulu, we are afforded an opportunity to critically evaluate our work and see if we still carry the same ideals that they espoused specifically with regard to the emancipation of the poor. Doing so will be a fitting tribute to Professor Asmal.

”To the family we pass our sincere condolences.”
