The Prime Minister of Poland, Mr Donald Tusk, will meet National Assembly Speaker, Mr Max Sisulu, tomorrow, Friday 18 October.
The meeting with Mr Sisulu will provide an opportunity to look at possible links between the Parliaments of South Africa and Poland. Poland’s ambassador to South Africa, Ambassador Anna Raduchowska-Brochwicz, will accompany Mr Tusk in his meeting with Mr Sisulu. Poland is among the eight newest members of the European Union they became members in 2004 and it is has one of the largest economies in central Europe.
Mr Tusk arrived in South Africa on Wednesday on an official visit which involved a series of bilateral consultations with Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and a range of Cabinet Ministers to strengthen co-operation between South Africa and Poland.
Areas which came under the spotlight included education and skills development, agriculture, science and technology, trade and investment and energy.An agreement on economic co-operation was signed during the visit, after which a Joint Economic Committee will be established.
During his visit, Mr Tusk is also scheduled to meet President Jacob Zuma today and be hosted at an official dinner in Pretoria.There are full diplomatic ties between South Africa and Poland. In September 1995 the two states signed a Protocol on Political Consultations and then-Deputy President Zuma paid an official visit to Poland in September 2004. Ministerial political consultations were held in 2007 in Pretoria.
