On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency President Jacob Zuma has conveyed a message of condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of all the victims of the Malaysian Airlines plane that crashed in Ukraine on 17 July 2014.
The Boeing 777 flight, which was carrying a total of 295 people, including passengers and crew, was en route from Amsterdam to the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lampur, when it crashed in eastern Ukraine.
President Zuma said: “We also extend our sympathies to the Government and the people of Malaysia, as well as all countries that have lost their citizens in the tragic crash. South Africa calls for a thorough, transparent and independent investigation to determine the cause of the incident.”
The South African High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has been informed by Malaysia Airlines that none of the passengers on board Flight MH17 was travelling on a South African passport.
