President Zuma requests Chief Justice to start process of filling vacancy in Independent Electoral Commission

President Jacob Zuma has requested Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng to initiate the process of filling the vacancy that has occurred due to the resignation of Ms Raenette Taljaard, the former part-time Commissioner of the Electoral Commission (IEC).

Section 6 (2) and (4) of the Electoral Commission Act (Act No 51 of 1996), calls for a panel consisting of the Chief Justice as Chairperson, the Public Protector, a representative of the Commission on Gender Equality and a representative of the Human Rights Commission to recommend candidates, to the committee of the National Assembly, for appointment as commissioners of the IEC.

The President is also currently considering a request from the National Assembly to appoint as Commissioner, Mr Glenton Mashinini, the former Deputy Chief Electoral Officer and current special adviser on special projects to the President.

The President will in due course also appoint the Chairperson of the IEC from among the members of the IEC.
