President Jacob Zuma has today, 28 January 2013, received an award presented by the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) on the sidelines of the 20th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government, taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The ALMA Award for Excellence in Impact and Implementation is given for exemplary leadership in policy, impact and implementation in the fight against malaria in Africa.
The ALMA Awards for Excellence are chosen by an independent awards selection committee, comprised of Dr. Rob Newman (Global Malaria Program, World Health Organization), Dr. James Banda (Roll Back Malaria Partnership), Prof. Fred Binka (University of Ho, Ghana), Mr. Sherwin Charles (Nando’s) and Dr. Akudo Ikemba (Friends of the Global Fund, Africa).
South Africa was recognised in this category alongside other African states, namely Cape Verde, Namibia, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Swaziland, and Zambia.
Receiving the award on behalf of the Government and the people of South Africa, President Zuma said: “South Africa and other SADC countries have initiated a process to eliminate malaria, in keeping with the call from the AU in its 2007 malaria declaration. Through collaboration with fellow SADC states, we have demonstrated massive reductions in each of our respective countries”.
