President Zuma mourns the passing of his protector

President Jacob Zuma is saddened by the loss of his protector, Patrick “Sho” Maphumulo who passed away on Sunday, 9 October, in Durban after a short illness at the age of 39.

Captain Maphumulo had been part of President Zuma’s security detail for many years, playing the role of number one protector, always behind or beside the President since his tenure as Deputy President.

He called him Mashimane, his clan name.

“I am still shocked by the news. When I see the team each morning I somehow forget and think I will see him. It will take a bit of time to get used to not seeing Mashimane. He was soft-spoken and polite, but a very firm no-nonsense man. He was always a pleasure to work with,” President Zuma said.

The President said he would miss his protector’s commitment, loyalty, dedication and efficiency.

President Zuma extended his deep-felt condolences to his wife Mrs Nonala Maphumulo, the children and the extended family.

President Zuma will attend the funeral at Ezinyathini Reserve, (kwa-Phezukomkhono) at Mbumbulu, KZN on Saturday.
