President Jacob Zuma today, 26 April 2012, met with the leadership of Disabled People South Africa (DPSA) at his official residence in Cape Town.
The meeting discussed matters of mutual interest between the DPSA and government, including:
- Mainstreaming issues of people with disabilities into government programmes
- Providing job opportunities for people with disabilities
- Funding of programmes to address issues faced by persons with disabilities.
The President expressed his satisfaction that the meeting took place. He reiterated the government's commitment to the issues that affect people with disabilities. He explained that this commitment is reflected in a variety of government initiatives including the very establishment of the Department of Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities.
The discussions were cordial and frank. It was decided that there will be ongoing interaction between government and the sector, and that the President will meet regularly with the DPSA to monitor progress in addressing issues affecting people with disabilities.
The DPSA delegation was led by the organisation's Chairperson Mr Muzi Nkosi, whereas Ministers of Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities Ms Lulu Xingwana and Social Development Ms Bathabile Dlamini also attended the meeting.
