President Zuma expresses condolences on the death of the leader of the Shembe Church

President Jacob Zuma has learned with sadness of the passing on this morning, 28 March 2011, of Inkosi Dr Vimbeni Shembe, the leader of the Shembe Nazareth Baptist Church of Ebuhleni Home, Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal.

The 101 year old church, known as the Shembe Church and AmaNazaretha, occupies an important place in the history of the country as one of the first African independent churches to be established in South Africa.

“We have learned with great sadness of the passing on of Inkosi Shembe. He played a key role in the history and development of the African independent churches in the country and the growth and promotion of indigenous culture and traditions.

We also acknowledge Inkosi Shembe’s contribution to the promotion of self-reliance and social responsibility amongst his followers and the community at large. The Shembe Church is at the centre of the lives of thousands of people of this country and our hearts go out to them on this major loss," said President Zuma.

The President extended his condolences to the family, relatives and the entire church congregation and wished them strength during this difficult period.
