President Zuma declares special Special Provincial Official Funeral for Reverend Mgojo

President Jacob Zuma has decided, on request of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government, to declare a Special Provincial Official Funeral for Reverend (DR) Khoza Elliot Mbuyisa Mgojo.

The Special Provincial Official Funeral is reserved for distinguished persons as decided by the President of the Republic, upon receipt of the request from the province of origin.

Rev Mgojo has distinguished himself as an educator and a cleric in our society. He is a struggle veteran for peace and justice. His determination and courage saw him confronting injustice and fearlessly speaking against apartheid. Rev Mgojo was in the forefront of peacemaking efforts, assisting those who fled their home and supported affected families who often sought refuge in churches.

As part of the KwaZulu-Natal Church Leaders Group, he participated in efforts to promote peace and reconciliation amongst the political groups in conflict, working with political leaders in the province.

The President has instructed that the National Flag fly at half-mast in the KwaZulu-Natal Province on the day of the funeral.

Rev Mgojo will be laid to rest on Tuesday, 11 September 2012 in Gamalakhe in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal.

Further details of the funeral arrangements will be communicated by the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government.
