President Jacob Zuma has decided, on request of the Gauteng Provincial Government, to declare a Special Provincial Official Funeral for Sister Bernard Ncube.
The Special Provincial Official Funeral is reserved for distinguished persons as decided by the President of the Republic, upon receipt of the request from the province of origin.
The President has decided to declare the funeral for Sister Bernard Ncube, as she has distinguished herself in her community and our society. She was also a leader of significant stature for many years.
During the 1970’s and 1980's, Sister Ncube helped to form the local women organisations in the Transvaal Region and in 1984, was elected the President of the Federation of Transvaal Women (FEDTRAW). She was instrumental in the development of women’s organisations in all the provinces of South Africa eventually four major women’s organisations emerged which were affiliated to the United Democratic Front (UDF).
After the 1994 elections, she was elected African National Congress Member of Parliament, where she served as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Arts, Culture, Science and Technology. She served as the Mayor of Krugersdorp from 2001 to 2006. Sister Ncube was respected globally for her courage and her commitment to the people of South Africa.
The President has instructed that the National Flag fly at half-mast in the Gauteng Province on the day of the funeral.
Sister Ncube will be laid to rest on Saturday, 8 September 2012 at Regina Mundi Church in Soweto at 08h00.
Further details of the funeral arrangements will be communicated by the Gauteng Provincial Government.
