President Zuma congratulates tennis champion Mr Sithole

President Jacob Zuma has congratulated tennis star Lucas Sithole for beating the world no.1 players in the men, women's and quad singles and becoming the first African player to win a Grand Slam wheelchair tennis title.

Sithole won his first singles titles in New York as the 2013 US Open Wheelchair Tennis Competition, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour on Sunday.

"We congratulate Lucas Sithole for this important achievement. It was no small feat. He has made both the government and the people of South Africa immensely proud,” said President Zuma.

Sithole had already made history before taking to the court for the quad singles final, having become the first African wheelchair tennis player to reach a Grand Slam singles final. He won 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
