President Zuma congratulates COSATU, NUM and Chamber of Mines on their agreement

President Jacob Zuma would like to congratulate Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Chamber of Mines on a successful meeting held yesterday where a framework was established to find a solution to end the strikes in the mining industry.

President Zuma said: “Our country has a progressive industrial relations framework. Worker and employer rights are guaranteed in the Constitution and we have legislation that sets out how industrial relations should be conducted. We are pleased that parties are talking, as it is only through dialogue that we can find solutions to the current wave of strikes. We urge parties to work towards a speedy solution in order to return the situation to normalcy in the mining sector, which is the backbone of our economy. Government will continue to provide support until a solution is found.

President Zuma reiterated the need for improved living conditions for mine workers and urged companies to undertake a renewed focus on implementing the Social and Labour Plan in the Mining Charter.
