President Zuma congratulates Archbishop Tutu

President Jacob Zuma wishes to express, on behalf of Government and all the people of South Africa, his warm congratulations to the former Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu on being awarded the Templeton Prize for 2013.

The Templeton Prize was conceived by the American-born British stock investor Sir John Templeton, who felt that the Nobel Prize recognised only the contribution of science to humanity but failed to honour religion. The first winner was Mother Teresa in 1973.

"We are extremely proud of this recognition to one of our own, the revered Archbishop Tutu. Even in his retirement, the Archbishop continues to inspire our country and its people to do more everyday to realise the universal goal of a better life for all. This honour is therefore well-deserved indeed," said President Zuma.
