President Jacob Zuma has condemned the killings that took place in Gatumba, Burundi, on 18 September 2011, in which 40 people lost their lives and many more sustained serious injuries.
During his recent state visit to Burundi, President Jacob Zuma commended the political leadership and the people of Burundi for their commitment towards peace and prosperity.
Following the killings of 18 September, President Zuma has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to President Pierre Nkurunziza, the government and the people of the Republic of Burundi.
President Zuma said, “We remain confident that the peace process in Burundi is intact and that the work of extremist elements should not derail the great African success story that is post-conflict Burundi.”
President Zuma added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Burundian people, particularly the families of the deceased and the injured, during this difficult time of mourning and sadness.”
