His Excellency President Jacob Zuma has concluded a successful visit to Lilongwe, Republic of Malawi, where he attended the 33rd Ordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government, which took place on 17 to 18 August 2013.
On 16 August 2013, the President participated in the Summit of the SADC Organ Troika on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation where he presented a report on Zimbabwe in his capacity as SADC facilitator on Zimbabwe. South Africa has held the position of facilitator since 2008. The Organ Troika comprises Namibia, South Africa and Tanzania.
At the full summit, the Republic of Malawi assumed the position of Chair of the SADC.
The summit considered a number of matters for deliberation and decision, including those relating to peace and security as well as regional economic integration.
SADC continues to serve as the primary vehicle for South African foreign policy to achieve regional development and integration within Southern Africa. South Africa's future remains inextricably linked to the future of the African continent and that of its neighbours in Southern Africa.
President Zuma was accompanied by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms Maite Nkoana-Mashabane; the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula; and the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies.
