Washington DC Ambassador Andrew Young and the Leon H Sullivan Foundation are to host a dinner in honour of President Zuma in Washington DC this evening, Tuesday, 13 April 2010.
The dinner, which marks the President's 68th birthday celebrations, will build on his passion for education and will raise funds for the Jacob RDP Zuma Educational Trust Fund.
President Zuma established the Jacob Zuma RDP Educational Trust Fund in 1998. To date, the fund has educated more than 20 000 children from the primary school to university levels.
Inspired by the life and principles of the late Rev Dr Leon H Sullivan, the Foundation bearing his name exists to promote the political, entrepreneurial and intellectual leadership of the African Diaspora and friends of Africa, and to advocate on behalf of Africa and the world's vulnerable people. The foundation's mission also includes promoting corporate social responsibility and economic development on the African continent.
The renowned band, the Temptations, led by the highly regarded Dennis Edwards, will entertain guests at the dinner. Formed in 1960 in Detroit, Michigan, the Temptations are one of the most successful acts to perform for Motown. The group's repertoire has included, at various times during its five-decade career, R&B, doo-wop, funk, disco, soul and adult contemporary music. Known for its recognisable choreography, distinct harmonies and flashy onstage suits, the Temptations are one of the most successful groups in music history and have sold millions of records. Dennis Edwards joined the Temptations in 1968.
Commenting on the dinner for President Zuma, Hope Masters, President and CEO of the Sullivan Foundation stated, "Hosting this dinner is particularly poignant for me because of the role that my father played in bringing an end to apartheid in South Africa. The Leon H Sullivan Foundation is proud to recognise President Zuma for his efforts to improve the quality of life for all South Africans."
