President Zuma appoints Political Adviser as special envoy to Sudan

President Jacob Zuma has appointed his Political Adviser, Mr Charles Nqakula, as his special envoy to the Sudan.

This is a strong reflection of South Africa’s commitment to assisting Sudan overcome the challenges that country faces.

South Africa currently chairs the African Union (AU) Ministerial Committee on the Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development of the Sudan. The committee comprises Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal and the Sudan.

Mr Nqakula also continues to be part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Madagascar team led by former Mozambican President Joachim Chissano.

He currently heads the President’s Zimbabwe facilitation team. He replaced then Deputy President Zuma as mediator in the Burundi peace talks in 2005.
