President Jacob Zuma this week received the recommendations by the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers relating to the remuneration of public office bearers for the 2009/10 financial year.
The Commission is required by section 8(4) and (5) of the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers Act, 1997, to make annual recommendations relating to the salaries, benefits and allowances, and to the resources required by public office bearers to enable them to the perform their respective duties effectively.
The Commission presented a recommendation of an 8% increase in remuneration packages of all public office bearers, effective from 1 April 2009.
After due consideration of the recommendations, taking into account the factors raised by the Commission, President Jacob Zuma has decided to implement a 7% salary increase across the board for public office bearers.
"We appreciate the considerations applied by the commission in determining the 2009/10 remuneration for public office bearers," President Zuma said. "In light of the current economic situation, and the pressure on government finances, I have decided to adjust downwards the percentage recommended by the commission," he said.
President Zuma commended the Commission for the thorough manner in which it has approached its work, and reiterated the importance of its independence.
