President Jacob Zuma sends condolences on the sad passing of Sir Richard Attenborough

President Jacob Zuma has received with sadness the news of the passing away of British actor and film director, Sir Richard Attenborough. Sir Richard was awarded the National Order of the Companions of OR Tambo at this year’s National Orders ceremony in April 2014.

Sir Attenborough received an Academy Award in 1982 for directing and producing Cry Freedom, a film about the death of South African anti-apartheid campaigner and Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko.

"We wish to express our deepest condolences to the Attenborough family at this hour. This distinguished film-maker has made a significant contribution to our struggle and history through his work and we shall be eternally grateful. May his soul rest in peace," said President Jacob Zuma.
