President Zuma sends condolences to Mexico following the devastating earthquake, tsunami and hurricane that battered the provinces of Chiapas, Oaxaca and Tabasco last week
President Jacob Zuma has, on behalf of the Government and the people of South Africa, extended the country’s condolences to the United Mexican States following the worst earthquake in a century that devastated the Chiapas, Oaxaca and Tabasco provinces.
On 7 September 2017, the worst earthquake in almost a century shook the south of Mexico and neighbouring countries, causing the deaths of almost 100 people, and severe damage and devastation to infrastructure and property. The earthquake was followed by a series of after-shocks, and a tsunami on the Pacific coast of Mexico.
At the same time, Hurricane Katia caused additional damage to the area.
President Zuma said “On behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, I send my condolences to President Enrique Peña Nieto of the United Mexican States and to the people of Mexico, for the loss of life and destruction caused by the recent earthquake, tsunami and hurricanes that have devastated the south of Mexico. South Africa shares its sorrow at the lives lost and terrible havoc wreaked by these natural disasters”.
