On behalf of the South African government and the people of South Africa, we wish to convey our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family of former High Commissioner to Namibia and struggle veteran, Curtis Nkondo, who died at the hospital on Thursday. Mr Nkondo, a leader, a diplomat, a teacher and a commissar, played a pivotal role in our struggle for freedom, and in the evolution of a democratic South Africa, a society in which all people today live in harmony.
The outstanding role that Comrade Nkondo has played as the vice-president of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in Cape Town and the subsequent leadership roles he has provided to African National Congress (ANC), the education fraternity and to the people of South Africa and abroad, compel us as nation to salute and honour him for his self-less sacrifice.
Death has robbed us life of an outstanding stalwart of the struggle who played a critical role in the fight to dismantle the bastions of apartheid and colonialism, a selfless and dedicated patriot, who was always willing and proud to serve his people.
Government and the people of South Africa take this opportunity to thank the Nkondo family for accepting the role that Comrade Curtis Nkondo played in dedicating his life to human rights, justice and freedom, sometimes to the neglect of his family.
The family should remain strong during this time, and be comforted by the knowledge that his contribution will forever etched in the history of this country. May his soul rest in peace.
