President Jacob Zuma on meeting of President's Coordinating Council

President Zuma convened the President's Coordinating Council

President Jacob Zuma has this morning, 6 March 2015, convened a meeting of the President's Coordinating Council (PCC) at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The PCC is the President's coordinating structure where he meets Premiers and the South African Local Government Association representing Mayors.

The meeting focused on improving the performance of local government in the country and the Back to Basics campaign. In particular, the PCC received and discussed a progress report on the implementation of the Back to Basics programme of improving local government and service delivery, including a report on progress regarding the work undertaken by the Municipal Demarcation Board of South Africa; an update on the preparations for the 2016 Local Government Elections; an overview on the implementation of the National Development Plan Vision 2030 by provinces and local government, as well as an update on the Presidential Hotline and the impact it has had in addressing challenges raised by citizens throughout the country.

"We have had very fruitful discussions indeed as different levels of government meeting in this Council to discuss various programmes aimed at improving service delivery at the local and most immediate level of governance for our people. We noted the continued work of the Municipal Demarcation Board as mandated by the Constitution and are also pleased with the speed of implementation of the NDP by provinces and municipalities but feel that more still needs to be done and at a greater speed,” said President Zuma.

President Zuma said the PCC meeting was particularly pleased by a report that as of 31 January 2015, all provinces had improved their complaints resolution to above the 80% resolution rate target, except for the Eastern Cape province at 73% since the Presidential Hotline was established in 2009 to provide South Africans with a platform to lodge their service delivery complaints, make enquiries, offer suggestions and compliments.
