President Jacob Zuma has expressed shock, sadness and outrage at the death of seven school children and injury to many others in an incident reportedly involving a bakkie that veered off the road and crashed into a house in the township of Imbali in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.
"We are always deeply saddened at the loss of lives and are more saddened it is young lives that have been lost in this manner. The pain felt by the families is immeasurable. We assure the families that our law enforcement agencies will get to the bottom of this incident but we wish to reiterate that it is important for drivers to use proper, lawful and roadworthy vehicles when transporting passengers especially children and urge drivers to exercise maximum caution at all times," said the President.
"On behalf of government and the people of South Africa, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to all those who were injured. May the souls of the departed children rest in peace," said President Zuma.
