President Jacob Zuma delivers the second ASIDI school in the Western Cape

The Accelerated School Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (ASIDI), our flagship infrastructure delivery programme, continues to impress.

Huge progress has been made in terms of improving school infrastructure in the country with the ASIDI programme contributing 78 schools to date.  Five of those schools are in the Western Cape, and on Thursday 11 September, President Jacob Zuma, accompanied by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga, Deputy Minister Enver Surty and the Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, delivered the second state of the art school in the province in Kensington, Cape Town. Deputy Minister, Enver Surty handed over Die Duine Primary school in Cape Town last week.

Kensington High School, one of 25 schools earmarked for building under ASIDI, will accommodate 1 200 learners from the surrounding area. The new school comes with all the necessary resources, including a media centre, computer lab, staff room, kitchen and a laboratory. The Premier Helen Zille acknowledged Government‘s efforts and commitment in reaching out to the less privileged communities across the country and added that it will change the education landscape for the better.

In his address, President Jacob Zuma told learners that they should use the new school to enable them to reach their dreams. The President encouraged learners to spend more time reading so that they can perform well in class. Minister Angie Motshekga said that learners should choose maths and science to broaden their future prospects. The Department is on a mission to equip maths teachers to improve the pass rate in all the gateway subjects. “Our vision is to improve the enrolment of maths and science up to 60 percent in public schools,” said Minister Motshekga.
