President Jacob Zuma congratulates Professor Karim for receiving AU Scientific Award

His Excellency President Jacob Zuma has today, 31 January 2015, congratulated South African Professor Salim S Abdool Karim, for receiving the African Union's (AU) annual Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Award in the field of Earth and Life Science.

The Awards Ceremony took place during the AU Summit, which is currently taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Award was presented by the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. The two recipients of the Award this year were from South Africa and Cameroon.

Professor Salim S Abdool Karim is the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Director of CAPRISA, the Centre for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa. He has contributed to thirty years of research on the Continent, especially in the field of HIV and AIDS.

In his acceptance speech, Professor Abdool Karim stated that Africa's scientists have an important role to play in scientific innovation and research, which will contribute to Africa's development and regional integration.
