The Presidency did inform Parliament on the employment of troops

The Presidency wishes to point out that President Jacob Zuma did in fact inform Parliament of his decision to authorise the employment of 400 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) personnel to the Central African Republic (CAR), and therefore did not violate the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

Reports alleging that President Zuma did not inform Parliament are false.

The employment is for the period of 2 January 2013 to 31 March 2018 and is authorised in accordance with the provisions of section 201 (2) (c) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996.

The employed members of the SANDF will assist with capacity building of the CAR Defence Force and will also assist CAR with the planning and implementation of the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration processes.
