The Presidency has noted with concern reports of an incident between members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Presidential Protection Unit (PPU) and an Eyewitness News reporter at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital yesterday, 16 March 2010.
The protection of the President, Deputy President and other members of the executive is the responsibility of the SAPS. The Presidency has no direct role in this function.
The Presidency has, however, requested a report from the SAPS about the matter so that the facts can be established.
The Presidency recognises the need for the media to be able to freely and effectively cover the President’s activities. They should be able to exercise their constitutional rights unhindered.
The Presidency also recognises that the PPU has a responsibility to guarantee the President’s safety at all times and to take all reasonable and necessary measures to ensure his security is not compromised.
The Presidency is discussing with the SAPS a proposal for a workshop between the Presidential Protection Unit (PPU) and media representatives to improve cooperation and understanding, particularly around coverage of the President and Deputy President.
It is essential that both the PPU and the media are able to do their work unhindered.
