Premier Thandi Modise on floods in Morokweng

Three rescued from floods in Morokweng

Three people who were nearly swept by floods after they were stranded on roof tops of their cars in the Morokweng areas near Ganyesa were rescued by Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Fire and Rescue Services on Thursday.

This follows reports that heavy rains in the area caused widespread flooding across Morokweng and neighbouring villages.

“The District Disaster Management Centre is monitoring the situation closely and if necessary it will escalate a request for the Provincial Centre to call on the South African National Defence Force to assist in airlifting communities trapped in far flung areas,” said Premier Modise.

According to reports, flooding wreaked havoc in central Morokweng on major roads linking Morokweng to neighbouring areas such as Tseoge, Bonabona, Pomfret, Vosterhoop, Morokwaneng and Tosca, making road travel almost impossible in those areas.

"Officials from the Provincial Department of Social Development are currently conducting a need assessment. We will await their report to determine if any relief efforts are necessary", said Premier Modise.

Hundreds of villagers in areas around Dikgwane wetland are reportedly the most affected as they are being inundated by water overflowing from the local swamps.
