Bokone Bophirima Premier Supra Obakeng Ramoeletsi Mahumapelo has noted with concern comments made by the leader of the Democratic Alliance Mr Mmusi Maimane regarding interventions in the Province’s municipalities. Mr Maimane erroneously contends that the Provincial Government’s interventions in Municipalities are allegedly confirmation of existence of corruption.
We wish to draw both the DA and Mr Maimane's attention to Sections 139 and 154 of the Constitution of the Republic which governs any form of intervention or support provided by both national and provincial governments in municipalities. The Provincial Government led by Premier Supra Obakeng Ramoeletsi Mahumapelo has consistently carried out its duties and implemented interventions or support in municipalities informed by the constitution, guided by recommendations of the Auditor General or weaknesses identified by municipalities themselves.
We call upon Mr Maimane and the DA to provide any proof they may have which supports their version. For the record, the Auditor General has confirmed that since May 2014, the number of municipalities requiring urgent support has dropped from 15 to only seven (7) as a result of government intervention and support. The seven municipalities which are currently under intervention were identified through this rigorous process by the Auditor-General and various systems have been put in place to strengthen and improve capacity in order to ensure that service delivery is not interrupted.
Premier Mahumapelo is satisfied with the progress Government is making in turning municipalities around. Allegations of corruption and maladministration when brought to our attention will be dealt with firmly through existing mechanisms like the Fraud and Forensic Investigation Unit within the Office of the Premier. We appeal to all members of the public including the DA and Mr Maimane in particular to report any information of corruption through this unit, or if they prefer to take such information to law enforcement agencies created by Government.
