The Gauteng Provincial Government today marked a significant infrastructure milestone as Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, together with MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, officially opened the upgraded K155 Road Corridor, a strategic transport route connecting key economic and residential areas in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.
The upgraded corridor, which includes widened roadways, upgraded intersections, improved traffic signals, pedestrian facilities and street lighting, is now fully operational. The project is expected to improve mobility, enhance road safety and strengthen connectivity for thousands of daily road users.
Addressing stakeholders at the official opening ceremony, Premier Panyaza Lesufi said the project reflects government’s commitment to infrastructure-led development and economic transformation.
“The K155 Road Project is a clear demonstration of our commitment to building a modern, connected and economically competitive Gauteng. Investments in infrastructure are investments in people. This road will improve mobility, unlock economic opportunities, attract investment and enhance the quality of life of communities in both Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.”
The K155 project forms part of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s ongoing efforts to modernise the province’s transport network while supporting economic growth, job creation and improved service delivery.
Speaking at the event, MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela described the project as a major investment in the future of Gauteng.
“The opening of the K155 Road Project represents a significant investment in the future of Gauteng. This road will improve the movement of people and goods, reduce travel delays and support economic activity across this important development corridor.”
Beyond improving traffic flow and reducing congestion, the project generated direct socio-economic benefits for surrounding communities.
During construction, 149 local labour opportunities were created, while community members received skills development training in various construction disciplines.
Local SMMEs also participated in the project through subcontracting opportunities in areas including security, transportation, paving, landscaping, road marking and civil works.
MEC Diale-Tlabela said the project demonstrates government’s commitment to ensuring that infrastructure development delivers meaningful socio-economic benefits.
“Infrastructure is about more than roads and bridges. It is about connecting communities to opportunities, creating jobs, empowering local businesses and improving the quality of life of our people.”
The official opening of the K155 Road marks the successful completion of a key infrastructure investment that is expected to support economic development, safer travel and improved regional connectivity for years to come.
“Today we are handing over a completed public asset that will serve the people of Gauteng for generations. The K155 Road Project stands as a symbol of progress, partnership and government’s commitment to building a modern and connected province,” said MEC Diale-Tlabela.
