Premier Nomvula Mokonyane on rectification of hailstorm damages in Gauteng

Rectification of hailstorm damaged houses gets underway in Tshwane

Work to repair houses that were damaged by the severe hailstorms in Gauteng late last year has begun in Tshwane.

This comes after Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane announced the names of the nine contractors that were appointed to repair the damaged houses, to the community of Soshanguve on Sunday afternoon at the launch of the rectification programme.

The areas that were mostly affected by the storms were Mamelodi Soshanguve, Hammanskraal and Zithobeni and as such priority will be given to these areas.

“This process will create both employment and training opportunities for members of the community, as labour will be localised thus empowering local people, especially youth through skills transfer.

“This is one of the ways in which we as government are ensuring that our people do not become spectators of development in their communities, but become part of the development,” said Mokonyane.

Due to the magnitude and intensity of the damages that have to be fixed, the project will be rolled out in two phases, the first phase which consists of 14 959 houses got underway yesterday.

Vulnerable households such as child-headed houses, houses belonging to the elderly and the indigent will be prioritized in this programme.
