Premier Mokonyane sends condolences to the family of the late struggle icon, Bertha Gxowa

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane has learnt with shock and sadness the news of passing on of struggle stalwart, Bertha Gxowa.

Mokonyane said Gxowa would be remembered as a champion for the poor who dedicated her life to the struggle for freedom, especially the empowerment of women.

"We mourn her loss and offer our deepest condolences and solidarity with her family and many friends at this difficult time," said Mokonyane.

Gxowa was born on 28 November 1934 in Germiston. She started her working life as an office assistant for the South African Clothing Workers Union.

She was one of the national organisers of the historic women's march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria in 1956.

Ever the organiser and activist, Mam' Bertha was also the founder of Malibongwe, a non-government, non-profit making organisation, focusing on the upliftment of women in South Africa. Malibongwe is currently engaged in a nationwide programme of action in certain key areas including food security, garment processing, education, manufacturing and HIV and AIDS.

"Mme Gxowa dedicated her entire life to the struggle and to the upliftment of women in South Africa and in particular the poorest of the poor. There is little doubt she is leaving a huge void behind," said Premier Mokonyane.
