Perpetrators of violence against the vulnerable, particularly elderly women should have no place in society but be permanently removed, North West Premier Thandi Modise said on Tuesday.
In expressing shock about the murder of a 98 year old Mahikeng woman who was found murdered in Tloung village outside Mahikeng over the weekend, Premier Modise called for intensified united action against crime and the scourge of rape. “When the elderly are living in fear of being raped by children old enough to be their grandchildren in some instances, society should stand up to say “enough is enough,”
In calling on the community to assist police in their investigations, Modise added that crime is eroding the moral fibre and needs to be fought on all fronts.
Police are reportedly investigating whether the woman whose body was found by her grandson was raped before she was killed.
According to Colonel Emelda Setlhako, the victim’s grandson alleged that he was on his way to a funeral and decided to have a look at his grandmother.
Setlhako alleges that the grandson found the victim lying on the floor covered with a blanket and that there was dry blood on the mats and underneath the blanket. She also reported that the victim had bruises on her face and strangling marks on her neck.
The grandson, who was in another room in the house at the time the incident occurred, apparently heard something fall in the woman's room earlier in the day, but did not investigate.
