North West Premier Mme Thandi Modise wishes to convey condolences to the families of the two people who were burnt to death during the fire that ravaged Nkageng and Sondela informal settlements outside Rustenburg on Sunday.
In appreciating relief efforts that were activated and coordinated by the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality Disaster Management Centre, Premier Modise also expresses gratitude to private organisations and Non-government organisations that had responded to the plight of those who lost their possessions and were left destitute as a result of the fire.
“As part of multi-disciplinary task team, Provincial government departments are already on the ground to support Rustenburg Local municipality to deal with the disaster and compile an assessment report that will inform urgent, medium and long-term interventions. We appeal to those whose lives have been disrupted by the disaster to exercise patience and cooperate with the team,” said Modise.
Preliminary investigation by police have confirmed that the shacks in the two informal settlements were gutted by fires fuelled by strong winds after paraffin stoves left overnight to keep warm caught fire.
Police have opened inquest dockets.
