Eastern Cape Premier Ms Noxolo Kiviet says the announcement by Daimler AG today, that it would be investing a further R2 billion into the East London plant in preparation for production of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class, is an early Christmas present and will be a major boost to the economy of the Eastern Cape and contribute to job creation.
Premier Kiviet was reacting to news that Mercedes-Benz South Africa (Pty) Ltd (MBSA), a unit of Daimler AG, today received confirmation of the production of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class, following extensive planning and preparation to present the East London plant as an optimal manufacturing location within the global production network.
Premier Kiviet said: “This investment affirms that the MBSA East London plant produces work of International Standards. The employees and management in that plant should be proud of securing this investment for our province.
We should also thank the Daimler AG for showing trust in our province, and for being a key automotive player and a social partner over the years. They have indeed played a significant role in industrial and corporate socio-economic transformation, and continue to do so today.
