Premier Kiviet visits Mdantsane schools as matric exams start

Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet braved the cold weather today to motivate Masixole High School matric candidates in Mdantsane ahead of their end of year exams. The visit is part of Premier’s series of visits to schools in the province as matric candidates start their exams.

Speaking to more than 50 jubilant matric candidates, Premier Kiviet assured the pupils that they have the ability to achieve more than 90 percent pass rate for the school which obtained a 36,2 percent last year. Premier said that she chose this school mindful of its past challenges and hopes that her visit will instil a positive attitude and confidence in the learners. She said, “Your matric results are the key to the beginning of your life and to contribute towards change in the country.”

The matric candidates have in the past months gone through extensive revision and subject advisors have been consulted to assist them. The provincial government has on the other hand introduced initiatives like the Learner Attainment Improvement Strategy (LAIS) which among other things focuses on learner support programme, in a commitment to better matric results in the province.

“We hope that the implementation of the Learner Attainment Improvement Strategy (LAIS) will impact positively to the learners’ performance,” said Premier. She further stated that the provincial government is working hard to address backlogs which include infrastructure in schools. “As government of the Eastern Cape we continue with our efforts to eradicate mud structure schools in the province and improving the teaching quality. We believe that a place where children are being mould is as important as the teaching quality, all because of the significance we attach to education.”

Alluding to anxieties caused by failing the exams, Premier Kiviet said that is a little stumble and does not end one’s life, it’s a little setback and there still is an opportunity to restart and move on. She concluded by commanding the matric candidates to go into the exam room with a positive mindset and self-assurance that they will pass. The Premier was also happy about the school’s readiness for the exams. All the logistics are in place including safety and security arrangements for the papers and classrooms for the sitting of the exams.
