Eastern Cape Premier Ms Noxolo Kiviet has urged more than 1 000 leaner’s at Booysens Park High School in Port Elizabeth to abstain from sex until the age of 23. Premier Kiviet was at the school to handover two new Data Projectors and two Screens which he promised to buy for the school earlier this year.
She said government is concerned about teenage pregnancy especially in schools. “Sex is enjoyment for two minutes and that two minutes can adversely affect your entire life. My plea to you is delay having sex until you are 23,” said Premier Kiviet.
Premier Kiviet said at 23, the learners could be at university and matured enough to make good decisions. She said the life expectancy is going down and this is caused by the HIV and AIDS. “People die before time and at 23 you will know what to do not to get infected with HIV. It is up to you to take advice”.
Booysens Park High School is in the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth, a crime ridden area where drug use and poverty are rife. Premier Kiviet adopted the Northern Areas as a focus area for her office after she saw the people’s leaving conditions. She is devoting time to the education system, rehabilitation of drug users and fighting poverty in the area. Premier Kiviet also urged learners to exercise their right and vote on 18 May. “Participate; it’s your investment to the future of this country.”
Tomorrow at 10h30 Premier Kiviet will turn her attention to Chapman High School (Gelvandale – Bell Road) to deliver on her promise to the school. There, Premier Kiviet will hand over a 620 meters security fencing project which she promised to erect.
Premier Kiviet had to slightly deviate from her programme though as she had to address a group of protesters who were burning tyres nearby. She told the protesters that the Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality has built a lot of houses. “We cannot build houses all at once. We must not behave as if we do not know that houses are built and burning tyres will not help you,” Premier Kiviet told protesters.
Premier Kiviet urged them to attend community meetings so that they can get information about housing delivery and other developments in their area.
