Premier Kiviet calls on the nation to accelerate child survival

Eastern Cape Premier Ms Noxolo Kiviet has today made a call to government and communities to accelerate child survival. Premier Kiviet was speaking at the national Children’s Day Celebration held in Summerstrand Hotel in Port Elizabeth, where South Africa was declared fit for children. More than 300 children delegates from the nine provinces were present at the event.

Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya, Eastern Cape Members of the Executive Council Executive and Nelson Mandela Metro Mayor Nondumiso Maphazi also graced the occasion to bear witness as children celebrated their childhood by debating issues that affect them and motivate them to be responsible children.

Premier Kiviet said, “We are gathered here today to re-affirm our unwavering support to a commitment of ensuring a bright, secure and dignified future to our children and our children’s children for the future.” She further stated that it is fitting that the province host this event as it is faced with the challenges of one of the most terrible abuse directed to the girl child, that of Ukuthwala (forced marriages). She warned those who continue with this unruly practice to stop with what they are doing. She pledged government’s commitment to fight it to its core, and create a society conducive for children. The expectation of the day as Premier Kiviet put is “to reach out to every child in every corner; to revive their spirit and dream to succeed, despite the many challenges that we all see and are confronted with.”

The day was full of activities ranging from music, dance and poetry. The children took centre stage, taking turns in discussing matters that can assist government and society to strengthen child survival.

The custom of circumcision was amongst the most topical discussion issues at the event with children making their thoughts heard on the subject. “Government should ensure that the illegal circumcision doctors are arrested for performing the ritual,” said one young person from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.
