Premier Mokgoro establishes task team to focus on violent community protests

Premier of the North West,  Job Mokgoro on 13 September 2018 announced the establishment of a Provincial Executive Council (EXCO) Task Team which is to specifically look into and deal with the sporadic and sometimes violent public protests in the province.

Premier Mokgoro’s decision comes in the wake of an increase in violent protests in the province, which often lead to the destruction and torching of public and private properties.  The Moretele Local Municipality property in Mathibestad was yesterday set alight by angry residents, who are complaining about service delivery.

The Task Team is comprised of four MECs and is led by the MEC for Education and Sports Development, Mr Sello Lehari.

The other three members are MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Dr Mpho Motlhabane, MEC for Finance, Economy and Enterprise Development, Ms Wendy Nelson as well as MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements, Ms Fenny Gaolaolwe.

The Premier has, with immediate effect, mandated the Task Team to begin interaction with various communities that have been engulfed in service delivery protests as well as all other affected stakeholders, this with a view to assist government find lasting solutions to the problems facing those communities.

The Task Team will provide regular feedback on all its interventions to the Premier and EXCO.
