Gauteng Premier David Makhura on behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government has wished a speedy recovery to all victims of a train collision that happened on Friday, 17 July between the Crown and Booysens stations in Johannesburg.
Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) confirmed that a train that was travelling to Naledi Station, carrying commuters collided in the rear of another stationery train which also had passengers on board between the Crown and Booysens stations. 239 commuters were injured and most were treated and discharged. Only 28 commuters are still admitted in hospital.
“We are very concerned with the frequency of accidents on our trains. These accidents should be avoided at all cost and we urge PRASA to take all necessary precautions to ensure that passengers reach their destinations safely and alive,” said Makhura.
The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage. Government urges all parties to ensure that an investigation is concluded speedily to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the accident.
